New York Faith & Justice Fellowship

I attended a house meeting in Brooklyn, NY for the New York Faith & Justice Fellowship this past Saturday while visiting friends in NYC. This group is spread out all over NYC and their goal is to engage with their various communities. The members were asked to share their thoughts on the needs they saw in their neighborhoods that they wanted to help out with. Some of the comments included: an after school program for kids with nothing to do between 4-5pm, nutrition, minimizing racial tension, feeding the families with out homes or means. The leader of the group listened to everyones comments and then responded with something so simple. She said that the first step to any of those problems is to educate yourself. Before heading into the communities and trying to "re-invent the wheel", find out what organizations/groups are already in place and find a way to come along side of them or underneath them and support them and work with them towards their goal.

I love this idea. It's so obvious.
