Planes, Taxis, and Tro-tros

Alright, Transportation-

While in country, we were driven around in our own tro-tro (aka. large passanger van). Although it made a high pitched squeeking noise, sounded like the brakes were going to give out at any moment, little to no shocks in the seats... I enjoyed very much having our own vehicle for the trip!! Maneuvering Accra city traffic is a bit of a nightmare and it's much more peaceful sitting three rows back from the front and just zoning out if I wanted to.

"I am in the traffic" -George, our driver for the trip
What a statement. Road signs are jumbled if there at all. Street lights are not turned on 90% of the time making stopping at them merely a suggestion. If a two lane road could fit three vehicles, a motorbike, a cyclist, people walking with baskets on their heads then go for it!! More power to you. Cars would merge with in inches of each other with nothing more than a friendly beep beep beep to let someone know you were coming only to be received by another beep beep or wave of the hand to say it was ok. It definitely takes an assertive driver to make it through the traffic everywhere. Yet, surprisingly there were very few fender benders or accidents.

We flew (pretty uneventfully, thankfully) from Richmond-New York-Accra. The last leg was between 9-11 hrs and as you can tell from the above photos, we were tired. Thankfully my new "best friend", Haley J.O., (I think if we had actually exchanged pleasantries we could have been friends...*sigh*) kept me entertained as he sat right behind me.
